When to Buy a New Mattress

If you’ve had your mattress for several years and are no longer getting quality sleep, you may be wondering if it’s time to buy a new mattress. To help you figure out if you’re sleeping on a bad bed, here are the top 10 warning signs that it’s time to replace your mattress.

1. You have not replaced your mattress in at least 6 to 8 years.

After about 6 to 8 years, mattresses begin to show signs of wear and tear, losing their ability to support your body while you sleep. Also, over this time, mattresses can collect all types of unwanted matter – from dust mites to dead skin cells, bodily fluids and other matter. One report found that after ten years the average mattress doubles in weight due to all of the extra matter it has collected.

2. Your mattress is lumpy.

Year after year as you sleep on your mattress, it will slowly compress in the areas you usually sleep, which can cause a lumpy bed. When you feel lumps in your mattress, it’s time to replace it so you can start enjoying a good night’s sleep again.

3. Your mattress sags or causes you to roll into the middle of the bed.

Sagging, including middle-of-the-bed sagging, is also a red flag that a mattress is well past its prime. If your mattress prevents you from lying down and remaining in any one spot on your bed, it’s time to get a new one. A sagging mattress doesn’t provide the support and comfort needed for a good night’s sleep.

4. Your bed no longer bounces back.

A good mattress will bounce back after you get out of bed. If your mattress doesn’t do this (and, instead, remains depressed after you climb out of bed in the morning), replace it.

5. Your mattress squeaks, moans or creaks when you sit or move on it.

Mattresses make noise when loose or broken internal components rattle around and brush past each other. While the sound can keep you up at night, the degenerating mattress can interfere with your ability to get quality, restful sleep. So, if your bed is noisy, it’s time to replace it.

6. You wake up in the middle of the night when your partner or pets move around on the mattress.

Good mattresses will support you and not disrupt your sleep even when others move around on it. If you’re feeling other’s movement on your bed – and if it’s waking you up and disrupting your sleep, get rid of it and get a new mattress.

7. You experience allergic reactions in bed.

As explained in bullet one, mattresses can collect all sorts of matter over time, including allergens. So, if you or your partner start to notice allergy flare-ups while in bed or after waking up in the morning, take that as a big red flag that you need a new mattress.

8. You wake up with a tingling sensation in your arms or legs.

An old mattress may not only be disrupting your sleep—it may also be causing you aches and pains. For example, an unsupportive mattress can cause pinched nerves, resulting in tingling in your extremities when you wake up. If this is happening to you, it’s time for a new, fully supportive mattress.

9. You wake up with back pain.

Another way an old mattress can cause you pain is by failing to support your back while you sleep, resulting in back pain. If you have had a back injury or if you are living with a condition like sciatica, you likely need more support from a firm mattress. If you’re waking up with back pain, your sleep surface is not providing the support that it should, and it’s time for a new one.

10. You can’t fall asleep, or you toss and turn at night.

While sleepless nights can happen when you’re under extreme stress, your mattress should not be contributing to them. If you can’t get comfortable enough on your bed to fall asleep, it’s definitely time to replace it.
